Little Miss

You made me sound like a sentimental fool
"Hey Dad just chill out, everything's cool"
Your mother says it's just another phase
"They're all like that at her age"
There's a message on your bedroom door
Sandra asked if you'd return her call
I think you made the netball team
And Nicole dropped by and got her magazine

In the darkness of the kitchen
Four breakfast places are all set
And I left the light on out in the hall
  Waiting all night for you

A ponytail princess when you were two
At six you were telling us all what to do
Your brother cried when you broke his nose
You just stood there with an innocent pose
(At) Your first slumber party away from home
You returned with your hair coloured mauve
Call us survivors, now you're sixteen
In my book you steal every scene

In the darkness of the kitchen
Four breakfast places are all set
And I left the light on out in the hall
  Waiting all night for you

Your mother tosses and turns as I pretend to read
It's 4am again and we can't sleep
Some nights I go out and turn on the TV
Stare at infomercials or a black and white movie
Say a prayer at the sound of each passing car
Listening for your footsteps coming down the path
Upstairs you left a mess in your room
But the only thing I ask is where are you...

In the darkness of the kitchen
Four breakfast places are all set
And I leave the light on out in the hall
  Waiting all night for you
