Sexism in the media...

There's overt sexism (eg. girls banned for playing football past the age of 12) and there's the more subtle type that we see everyday, perhaps without even realising it. Witness the headline from the ABC website discussing Karrie Webb's progress in the Birtish Open golf:

Webb continues British Open love affair

What's sexist about that? Well, let's devise a fictional headline:

Tiger Woods continues British Open love affair

Somehow I doubt you'd ever see the latter. Posted by david at August 1, 2003 10:54 AM

Letter to Eric Olsen of Blogcritics.org. His letter made it to MSNBC...written for fellow journalist Jan Hermann (of Page Six Gossip col.)

Dear Eric, It is apparent that any self made and financially successful female who puts herself in the Media spotlight is going to get burned, (i.e. Brittany, J.Lo, Martha Stewart, Madonna, Kylie Minogue) - and I don't have to be omniscent to predict that Nicole Kidman and Carly Fiorina are the next news victims.

Your article on Justin versus Brittany is extremely blatant in it's goal of slanting the views of readers into disprespect of a Brittany's phenomenal FINANCIAL success in the entertainment industry.

I believe the media has the power to shut out and further make invisible the quest of modern women today in order to control their financial goals and successes. I also believe that men fear powerful women and sexualize female journalists in a male dominated business such as the media. Instead of communicating women’s “issues, concerns, and actions,” the media remains a male dominated news hierarchy.
I'm tired of reading about sensationalist, virgin/whore, victim/demon binaries, aren't you tired of writing about it? What about the successes of women you know in your life. I doubt you would want them to be more successful than yourself.

Since your industry is dominated by men, I understand how such demeaning articles get written, but I implore you to think about how you report on women and why. The apparent sexism of the media is so prevelant that it emotes an agenda.

Oh...the article about Kylie showing off her ass? Need I say more.

I thought this was very well written and Carrie, you seem to have such wonderful opinions! My class (a gr.8 class at E.A.S.T. alternative school, Toronto, Ontario) is doing an advocacy project, my topic to advocate in is Sexism in the Media. So as I was searching for information on google about it, I hardly found anything uselful, because there was so little to pick from that was actually about Sexism in the Media, but i thought your letter was great, and if you ever have some spare time, I would love to get in contact with you to talk. Have a nice day.
