new & upcoming releases: Shelby Lynne - how not to do album artwork
posted by david on Fri 30 Nov 2001 @ 11:56 PM
album cover The new Shelby Lynne album is now in stores so I just want to do a general Shelby rant. I picked up my copy yesterday so I can't yet say how much I like it (yes, I like it so far) but what has me truly appalled is the album artwork: there's no question she's a sexy lady but geez, how tacky can you get? The front cover looks like one of Aerosmith's less inspired moments (eek!), the back cover has a "I haven't zipped up this jacket because I want you to notice the whole no-bra thing" photo and then she does the really-nipply-shirt thing inside the front cover. And need I mention the mirrors? If it was a marketing decision to present her like this, well, who are they targeting? Hustler readers? And if it was Shelby's decision, what on earth is she trying to say? I can't hear any relationship between what I'm hearing and what I'm seeing. I've read a few bad reviews which seem more upset by her choice of Glen Ballard as producer or this artwork than the music itself. If you thought the US artwork for her Grammy award-winning "I Am Shelby Lynne" was a bit tacky compared to the the Aus/UK artwork, you ain't seen nothing yet...
music news: Sydney: Harbourside Brasserie to close
posted by david on Fri 30 Nov 2001 @ 11:55 PM
In a year which has seen the closure of two of Melbourne's better known music venues (The Continental, Punters Club), this week it was announced that one of Sydney's better known venues, the Harbourside Brasserie, is to close. Noise complaints from nearby residents is the main cause for the closure and the owners hope to re-open the venue elsewhere in Sydney (but I suspect it won't feature the word "Harbourside" in it's name). Can someone tell me what exactly people expect when they choose to live in the heart of a city? Cows mooing in the morning? It always strikes me as pretty silly, like when residents of apartments next to Luna Park complained about the noise from the rollercoaster as it whizzed past their windows. How shocking! A noisy rollercoaster in a fun park! Who could've imagined that!
upcoming gigs: Melbourne: Summertime Rocks summer again
posted by david on Fri 30 Nov 2001 @ 11:54 PM
Another summer in Melbourne, another round of free Summertime Rocks concerts on the lawn of the Arts Centre. As usual, they happen 4-6pm each Sunday through to March 10. I caught a few of them last year and I must say, they were well worth the money. <grin>
live: Live: Charlie Marshall & The Body Electric @ Corner Hotel

Charlie Marshall I know practically nothing about Charlie Marshall. I think he's the brother of Christopher Marshall (I don't know much about him either), he was in Harem Scarem with Christopher and these days he puts out albums through WMinc. I was invited along to the launch of Charlie's latest album 'Story Of Us' by Graham Lee (WMinc) and while I was vaguely curious about Charlie, I must admit I was particularly curious on whether my new digital camera was any good when snapping gig photos. In my eagerness to figure out all of the weird and wonderful controls on the camera, I somehow snapped 210 photos and didn't pay as much attention to the music as I should have. What I did hear sometimes reminded me of Not Drowning Waving and at other times was solid but melodic rock. I love rock with a sense of atmosphere and the opening number certainly had that. I left the gig a little intrigued by it all so I'm now trying to get a handle on the album.
